Shan Shui (Chinese landscape painting) series of paintings depicts natural landscapes that resembles the mountains and trees in traditional Chinese paintings. Xu Zhen found these images on Google Maps, and then uses the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting to filter these digital landscapes, reintroducing the concept of qi (vital energy) in nature and expanding the perspective and methodology of traditional Chinese landscape painting.
In this drawing, two pine trees are standing in a windy environment – one is taller while the other is smaller. Their trunks are strong, with their branches dancing in the wind like waves. In the Fisherman in Chu Ci , waves represent the spirit to seclude oneself from the outside world and live in an otherworldly way. Therefore, waves are often seen as a metaphor for a seclusive lifestyle and a detached manner.
