This work uses “the frozen lake of a classical garden in winter” as a metaphor to present a state of compressed flow. The ink in the composition is neither fully laid out nor completely dissipated; instead, it forms a nearly static texture through layered accumulation—like the critical moment before water solidifies.

Within the context of Suzhou gardens, water is not merely a landscape element but a medium that organizes space and time. When water freezes, its flow is temporarily suspended, yet internal tension remains. This “unvanished movement” is transformed in Xu Zhen’s ink painting into fine textures and subtle tonal shifts. The viewer confronts a duration of time suspended between solidification and non-solidification.
